Who Is the Building Blocks Summer Intensive For?

To put it simply, the Building Blocks System is for everyone. Both beginners and Broadway professionals have taken pre-launch offerings of this class, and they have experienced breakthroughs and immense growth as a result of this course.

However, the Building Blocks Summer Intensive is specifically intended for people looking to develop their acting skills at a professional level. Because of this, it is best suited for:

  • Industry professionals looking to dive back into their craft following a hiatus due to COVID-19

  • Collegiate theater/music theater students (or recent graduates) looking for a way to apply their education in a practical and personal way

  • Performing artists (such as dancers or singers) looking to develop their acting skills

  • Actors looking to find their personal approach to acting, instead of being forced into a pre-existing mold

PLEASE NOTE: We are only accepting applicants 18 years of age or older at this time. Stay tuned for future high school intensive announcements.

Weekly Breakdown

The weekly breakdown is as follows:

  • Week One: Freeing the Mind and Body and Preparation and Research

  • Week Two:  Inner Life

  • Week Three: Voice and Physicality

  • Week Four: Environment and Business

This intensive offers 38 hours of instruction, which breaks down as follows:

  • Two 3-hour technique classes per week

  • One 3-hour scene study class per week

  • Two hour-long private coaching sessions through Dan Hoy Coaching

It is through this experience and education that Dan developed the Building Blocks System.

Auditions and Enrollment

The intensive will only be accepting 10 students in total. This allows us to create the highest-quality experience by ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate and receive consistent, personal instruction.

Because of the extremely limited number of slots, we will be requiring an audition to be considered for enrollment in the summer session.

For your audition, please prepare a self-tape with the following:

  • Two contrasting monologues. While there is no strict time limitation, please try to keep each monologue under 90 seconds.

  • A slate that includes your name and the titles of your two monologues.

If possible, please send the self-tape as one file (edited as slate, monologue #1, monologue #2). If there is a technical limitation that prevents you from editing the video, you can send it as multiple files (as long as each file is clearly labeled).

Submit all auditions to 1dhoy3@gmail.com with the following subject line:

  • [YOUR NAME] — Audition — Building Blocks Summer Intensive 2021

ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE SENT IN BY APRIL 1st.

If you have any questions, you can reach out to the instructor (Dan Hoy) at 1dhoy3@gmail.com or through the chat feature below.

COVID Safety Precautions

COVID-19 is a serious illness and must be treated as such. While we are hoping that vaccination efforts will be further along by the time the intensive takes place in June, we will be utilizing the following procedures to keep students and faculty safe:

  • All students and instructors will be provided with masks and face shields. Our hope is to be able to do scene work without masks, but that is pending CDC guidance as the vaccination rollout continues.

  • All students and instructors will be required to complete weekly COVID testing or provide proof of completed vaccination.

  • All students and instructors will be subject to temperature checks before being admitted into class.

  • All students and instructors will be provided with hand sanitizer

  • The studio will be sanitized before and after every class.

These precautions are all in line with the current CDC guidelines. If those guidelines change, Building Block Studios will adapt to the most current literature. If you have any questions or concerns, please email Dan at 1dhoy3@gmail.com or reach out through the chat feature below.

*The specific studio location is currently pending and will be shared with students following acceptance into the intensive.
